Ascension Rethinks Payer Negotiations Under New Strategy Chief
St. Louis-based Ascension, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the US, is reworking how it negotiates with insurers. In early January, the system named Tamar Goldblatt vice president of payer revenue strategy and contracting, according to Becker's Hospital Review. Since taking the role, Goldblatt has worked with system and ministry leaders to map the distinct needs of each local market and tie them back to Ascension's broader payer strategy.
The framing is a move beyond the traditional "us vs. them" posture that has defined hospital-insurer talks. Instead of treating every negotiation as a zero-sum fight, Ascension is pushing for a more coordinated, market-specific approach that aligns local priorities with enterprise goals.
The timing matters. Hospitals nationwide are squeezed by Medicare Advantage growth, rising claim denials, and tighter reimbursement. Systems from Scripps to SSM Health have publicly clashed with payers and even dropped plans. Ascension's bet is that a unified, collaborative strategy wins more than a fragmented, combative one.
