Novant, Baptist Health Push Hospital M&A Forward
Hospital consolidation kept moving in mid-June, with two regional systems advancing deals, according to Becker's Hospital Review.
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health received approval to proceed with its proposed acquisition of Mount Airy-based Northern Regional Hospital, a move that deepens its presence in North Carolina. Separately, Baptist Health closed the acquisition of its 13th hospital, adding to a growing portfolio.
The deals fit a familiar pattern. Larger systems continue to absorb community and regional hospitals, betting that scale brings stronger negotiating leverage with payers, more efficient back-office operations, and the capital smaller facilities often struggle to raise on their own. For independent hospitals facing thin margins and rising labor and technology costs, joining a bigger system can be a path to stability. For patients and regulators, the open question remains whether consolidation improves access and care or simply concentrates market power and pricing.
