Rural Hospital CEOs Team Up to Chase Federal Funding
Seven rural hospitals decided to pursue federal rural health transformation funding together, and the first step was getting competitors into one room. "We left all our competition at the door, and in the room, we began to brainstorm: How can we make this a better place for the people we serve?" David Walker, CEO, told Becker's Hospital Review.
The move reflects a broader pattern. Rural providers face thin margins, workforce shortages, and shrinking patient volumes, pressures that make going it alone harder to sustain. Pooling resources to chase federal dollars lets smaller hospitals compete for funding and infrastructure they could not win individually.
The harder work is trust. According to Becker's, CEOs build it by anchoring conversations in shared patient outcomes rather than market share, and by being transparent about each organization's goals. For executives weighing similar partnerships, the lesson is that collaboration among rivals is increasingly a survival strategy, not a nice-to-have, especially where federal programs reward coordinated regional approaches.
