250 Seattle-Area Clinicians Move to Unionize

About 250 advanced practice providers across Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital are seeking to join the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, the union said in a June 15 news release reported by Becker's Hospital Review. The nurse practitioners and physician assistants work across multiple clinic locations in the Puget Sound region.

The move reflects a broader trend of unionization spreading beyond resident physicians and nurses to advanced practice providers, who now deliver a large and growing share of direct patient care. As staffing pressures, workload and pay disputes intensify across health systems, these clinicians are increasingly turning to collective bargaining to gain leverage on working conditions.
