California Hospital Down to 8 Days of Cash, Warns of Closure
Watsonville (Calif.) Community Hospital has about eight days of cash on hand and faces what it calls "a serious financial gap" that could force it to close within six to 12 months without intervention, according to an Oct. 15 release shared with Becker's Hospital Review. The Pajaro Valley Health Care District, which operates the facility, will host an Oct. 22 town hall to discuss the shortfall with the community.
Eight days of cash is a dangerous margin. Healthy hospitals typically hold months of operating cash, and a single-digit figure signals the facility cannot absorb any disruption in payments, volumes, or costs. The district took over the hospital in 2022 after a bankruptcy, and the latest warning shows how precarious that rescue remains.
Watsonville is not an outlier. Safety-net and rural hospitals across the country continue to struggle with thin margins, rising labor and supply costs, and heavy reliance on Medicaid and Medicare. Each closure threat puts emergency and inpatient access for a local population at risk, forcing longer drives for care.
