WVU Medicine Grows to 31 Hospitals Across Four States

WVU Medicine, the Morgantown-based academic system, has expanded from five hospitals when Albert Wright Jr., PharmD, became CEO in 2014 to 31 hospitals across four states today. Its largest deal yet just carried the system into the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Wright said Nov. 2 at Becker's CEO + CFO Roundtable.

The push outside West Virginia is intentional. The state has one of the smallest and oldest populations in the country, limiting how much a system can grow within its borders. According to Becker's Hospital Review, Wright framed the geographic reach as necessary to build the scale an academic medical center needs to fund research, recruit specialists, and absorb financial pressure.

The strategy mirrors a broader trend of regional systems crossing state lines to find patient volume and negotiating leverage. For WVU Medicine, growth into neighboring markets like Pennsylvania positions it against larger competitors while spreading fixed academic costs across a wider base.
