Wyoming Hospital District Board Won't Renew CEO Contract
The board of trustees for the Crook County Medical Services District, which operates Crook County Hospital in Sundance, Wyoming, voted Aug. 27 not to renew the contract of district CEO Micki Lyons, DNP, RN, according to Becker's Hospital Review. The board ratified that decision at a Sept. 4 special meeting viewed by Becker's, and appointed Chris Thomas as interim CEO.
Leadership churn at small rural hospital districts carries outsized weight. These facilities often run on thin margins, depend heavily on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, and struggle to recruit executives and clinicians to remote communities. A single CEO transition can stall strategy, capital planning, and staffing decisions in ways larger systems can absorb more easily.
Interim leaders like Thomas typically bridge operations while the board runs a formal search, a process that can take months in rural markets. For Crook County residents, continuity of care at the district's hospital and affiliated services is the practical stake as the board sets its next steps.
