1 in 5 Physicians Report Depression, New Survey Finds

Nearly half of full-time U.S. physicians say they have experienced burnout, and one in five report depression, according to a Medscape report published Aug. 3 and covered by Becker's Hospital Review.

The findings draw on responses from 5,159 physicians across 29 specialties, collected between Jan. 15 and April 16. Forty-six percent reported burnout at some point, and 20% reported depression. The numbers point to a workforce strain that has not eased despite years of attention since the pandemic.

For hospitals and medical groups, physician mental health is not just a wellness issue. Burnout and depression correlate with higher turnover, reduced clinical hours, and risks to patient safety, all of which compound existing staffing shortages and drive up recruitment costs. Health systems have responded with wellness programs, reduced administrative burden, and efforts to cut documentation time, including AI scribes. The persistence of these numbers suggests those interventions have yet to move the needle at scale, and that structural fixes to workload remain unfinished.
